Frequently asked questions
FreshStart™ is an intravaginal probiotic gel containing a consortia of beneficial probiotics that are abundant in the reproductive tract of healthy cows.
FreshStart prepares the reproductive tract for calving and restores the uterine environment postpartum. Pre-partum administration helps cow prime their reproductive tract for calving, and post-calving administration efficiently restores the uterine environment to help fresh cows optimize for lactation & breeding success.
The shelf-stable gel also contains prebiotics and a patent pending formulation to assure gel retention and probiotic engraftment.

ProPreg™ is an intravaginal probiotic gel containing a consortia of beneficial probiotics that are abundant in the reproductive tract of healthy cows. When administered intravaginally to a cow during breeding protocols, this probiotic gel helps establish a healthy balanced reproductive microbiome that supports breeding success.
FreshStart™ and ProPreg™ are NOT treatments nor are they drugs to treat metritis. It is a natural product to assure the presence of a healthy and robust population of native beneficial vaginal bacteria. As cited in literature, a robust reproductive microbiome reduces the probability of uterine infections.¹ Uterine infections negatively affect the well-being, productivity, and reproductive performance of the cow which ultimately negatively affects the profitability of a farm.

During late pregnancy and after calving, a cow’s immune system is weak due to stress, hormonal, metabolic and physiological changes. Nutritional changes, dry treatments, vaccines, grouping dynamics, and calving itself all disrupt and imbalance the reproductive tract microbiome over the transition period. These events and a disrupted reproductive microbiome may allow opportunistic pathogenic bacteria from the environment to enter, multiply, and establish infection.
Proactively introducing FreshStart™ intravaginally before and after calving supports the presence of good bacteria to compete with these pathogenic bacteria, thus maintaining a healthy reproductive microbiome.
As a proactive measure for every cow, it is recommended that FreshStart™ is administered with the following protocol options:
Selection of the pre-calving and post-calving protocol options is entirely based on how your existing operations how best to implement the FreshStart protocols within existing processes.
Yes, on the surface, it sounds like a lot of effort. The key is to establish the presence of FreshStart ™ probiotics in the reproductive tract before calving, and ProPreg’s probiotics during breeding protocols. Ensuring for the right probiotics to engraft in the reproductive tract protects the reproductive microbiome from the damaging effects of calving and life on a dairy farm.
Calving dates are not certain and the pre-partum administrations assure coverage and engraftment. Post-calving is when environmental bacteria most often gain a foothold. Applying FreshStart™ seven days after calving allows for the process of uterine involution to eliminate and reduce this potential pathogen load.
FreshStart™ can be easily integrated into your farms’ transition cow protocols and routines, and ProPreg™ can be easily integrated into your farms’ existing breeding protocols. Healthy Cow can work with you, your herd advisors, and your veterinarian to establish protocols into your dairy herd management software program (i.e. BoviSync, DC305, PCDart, DHI Plus, etc). The FreshStart™and ProPreg™ protocols are usually scheduled for once a week and typically synced with other procedures.
We recommend appropriate restraint during Freshtart™ & ProPreg™ administration, such as using feed bunk headlocks or similar. The method of application is similar to artificial insemination. Administration is intravaginal and not intrauterine, so it's much simpler and less intricate in principle. FreshStart™ & ProPreg™ administration are not painful to the cow.
Lubrication can be used if needed.
FreshStart™ & ProPreg™ should be stored at controlled room temperature 20°-25°C (68°-77°F).
Healthy Cow is interested in working with progressive dairy producers, veterinary practitioners, bovine reproduction consultants, and academic researchers to evaluate different applications of ProPreg™.
